Men's Football - SJCAFC

St John's College Association Football Club (SJCAFC) is the most magnificent club of them all. With 3 men's teams, all skill levels are welcome.

St John's College Football Club (also known as The Poulets) play in the first of the six college divisions. We often fluctuate between the first and second division, and are in the process of trying to cement John's as a team that consistently ranks amongst the best college football sides. The standard of division one football is usually very high, giving players a chance to compete against, and with, the best the uni has to offer. Each year we lose essential players as they finish their degrees, so we are always eager to welcome new players into the first team. Please come along to our pre-season if you're interested!

The 2nd team had a very strong season in the 3rd division being the highest placed 2nd team of any college and a strong run to the quarter finals in the Plate. The 3rds finished 4th in the 6th division with the highlight of their season being getting to their cup.

1st Captain: Lucca Martins

2nd Captain: Benjamin Herring

3rd Captain: Ed Brewer

Women's Football - John's and Kings

The John's and Kings women's football team is one of the most friendly, fun teams at college. Open to all abilities (even beginners!), we have weekly training sessions and matches most weekends. It is also a great way to meet people at Johns and at Kings, and we organise socials throughout the year.

We were very successful in the 2021/22 season, gaining promotion into the second division, and reaching the semi-finals of the inter-college cuppers tournament. We hope to see you at a training session or social soon!

Contact captain Jenny (jcd75) for more detail.

Men's Rugby - SJCRUFC

St. John's College Rugby Union Football Club, more affectionately known as the Redboys, is the most successful college sports teams Cambridge has ever seen. Our well-decorated trophy cabinet dates back to the 1800s, where Redboys past and present performed well on and off the pitch.

Our successes can be attributed to the hard work we invest in our training and fitness, and the commitment of senior players to coach players of all experiences. Joining the Redboys is one of the best decisions you can make whilst studying at St John's - you'll forge friendships and create memories that will last a lifetime!

For more information, please contact our very friendly Captain, Matthew West, or our equally amicable Vice Captain, Eddie Kembery.

Women's Hockey - The Mags

The Mags are one of the most successful hockey teams in Cambridge and one of the most social teams in college. We compete in the College Mixed League with the Mogs as a unified St John's College Hockey Club (SJCHC) and can boast wins in both Division 1 and Division 2 for the 2022/2023 season. We have four mixed teams in the league, so all abilities are welcome!

The Mags are a super social bunch with various socials throughout the year ranging from more relaxed socials within the Mags, to larger swaps with other sports teams at St John's. As such a friendly and welcoming club, you'd struggle to find a better women's sports team to be a part of.

If you're a novice or expert, or anywhere in between, and are keen to join the Mags, please feel free to drop any questions you may have to our Captain, Lottie (cmc218@cam.ac.uk).

Lottie Cotterell - Women's Captain 2023-24

Men's Hockey - The Mogs

The Men’s Hockey Club, honourably known as ‘The Mogs’, are one of the largest sports teams in college, with over 20 players coming from a wide range of hockey backgrounds. The Mogs have recently merged with the Women’s Hockey Club (The Mags) to create a united St John’s College Hockey Club (SJCHC) that participates in the College Mixed League. Since then, SJCHC has become the largest and most successful college team, with recent accomplishments including coming 1st in the Michaelmas and Lent leagues for 2 years in a row as well as coming 2nd in this year's annual Cuppers knockout tournament – narrowly losing to Jesus by one goal.

We have at least one training session a week, open to newcomers as well as those with experience playing hockey, with social events and games also happening on a weekly basis. The club is very welcoming to people who have never played hockey before, providing coaching and support to those picking up a stick for the first time. If you’re interested in getting involved with SJCHC, don't hesitate to contact our Club President Will Gibbens (wrg26@cam.ac.uk) or myself (amc267@cam.ac.uk).

Alex Clarke – Men’s Captain 2023-24

Basketball

The St John's Basketball Club is a skilled group of players that currently compete in the 2nd Division out of 5 in Cambridge. We are also one of the most diverse clubs in the entirety of college in many measures, including a strong representation in Freshers, with notable names include Alexei and Samuel, who look to continue the legacy of the club in coming years. With training twice a week, the club gives opportunities for anyone who would want to get involved in the sport.

For enqiries, please contact the captains Zak (id373) and Alexis (ayy20).

Mixed Netball

At John's, mixed netball is one of the sports increasing in popularity the fastest. A large uptake during Covid year meant that John's entered two teams into the league system and the cup competition in 2021/22 for the first time. These teams currently sit in strong positions in the second and fourth divisions. Mixed netball is open to everyone (by virtue of 'mixed') - and this also means people of all abilities and levels of experience. It is one of the best ways in John's to simultaneously make friends, get some good exercise, and visit other colleges - and all at a low commitment level (no training, relatively quick matches). It is definitely worth considering joining the SJCMNC!

Please contact Ben (bpc41) for more details.

Netball - SJCNC

The Netball Club at St Johns has long been one of Cambridge's most successful netball squads, but is also an extremely welcoming club that is open to anyone. Every year we compete in the league and Cuppers fielding up to 2 teams, normally placing quite high up in both tournaments. This year our 1sts have celebrated winning the 2023 Cuppers final and are so far unbeaten in the league with high hopes of winning it!

Please Contact Orlane (ov240@cam.ac.uk) for more details.

Rowing - LMBC

Founded in 1825, the Lady Margaret Boat Club (affectionately known as Maggie) is one of the oldest and most successful college boat clubs on the River Cam! We offer rowing and coxing programmes for both complete beginners and people with experience. The Maggie calendar is filled with races, social events, and our termly Boat Club Dinner!

We host over 100 new freshers every year at our boathouse for our annual Welcome BBQ - making it one of St. John’s most popular sporting societies!

Anyone interested in getting to know more about us, feel free to contact our captains via email at lmbc@cucbc.org, as well as follow us on Facebook and Instagram @ladymargaretbc for more information. Or come down to the boathouse for a friendly chat!

Mixed Lacrosse

St John's Mixed Lacrosse is currently in the top division of the College League, having been promoted in the Lent 2022 season. The team is very welcoming and, while maintaining a competitive spirit, is a relaxed and fun environment. Mixed Lacrosse is for everyone at St John's, no prior experience is needed and most of the current team tried Lacrosse for the first time at St John's - beginners are always welcome. Anyone interested in joining and trying out Lacrosse should contact the captain, George Whittome (gdw30).

DanceSport

The St John's College Dancesport team welcomes dancers of any level of experience, from complete beginners to Blues athletes. We compete in the annual cuppers competition organized by the Cambridge University Dancesport team.

While we do not organize any classes ourselves, we organize shared practice sessions at the Palmerston room, and have produced many Blues athletes over the years.

Ultimate Frisbee

St John's College Ultimate is one of the friendliest sports teams in college! We welcome all players of any ability and strike a good balance between playing for fun and playing to win.

Ultimate is an incredible sport and we are looking to build the team over the next couple of seasons, so please do try us out - whether you've played before or not! In term times, we have 5/6 matches per term and one midweek training but we're very flexible so don't worry if you can't make everything. We also have regular socials too!

Please get in touch with Naina Reddy (nr517@cam.ac.uk) or Jacky Weng (jw2234@cam.ac.uk) if you would like more information.

Swimming and Water Polo

Historically St John's has had a strong swim team which competes in the annual cuppers competition, normally held in Easter term.

Many swimmers at John's also compete in the cuppers water polo league in a legendary combined team with Churchill. This year we are revamping college league with more opportunities to play and represent the college.

The college teams do not provide supplementary training- all of us are members of the university team, but don't be put off joining CUSWPC as we cater for a wide range of abilities. Taster sessions and trials are held every year. Please message the CUSWPC Instagram account for more information.

Badminton

The St John's College Badminton Club welcomes players of any ability to come enjoy some casual and/or competitive play with us. Casual training sessions open to everyone are held in the Palmerston room (commencing 31.10.19).

We also have teams competing in the termly college open league (COL) and the annual Cuppers tournament in Lent.

Join our Facebook group to get involved and keep updated, or get in touch with Arin Ward if you have any questions.

Squash

St. John's College Squash Club are a relatively new team to the intercollegiate squash ladder but have moved up through the divisions extremely fast - gaining an arising rep for having a strong and competitive team.

We also host a recreational session once a week for anyone of any ability to come enjoy some casual squash.

Squash captain : Sam Hewson (sh2099)

St John's Voices

St John's Voices is the College's extremely fine mixed-voice choir. Founded in 2013, SJV is one of Cambridge's newest choirs, and is made up of male and female students of the College.

Renowned for being friendly and relaxed as well as for its remarkably high musical standards, the choir sings evensong on Mondays in the beautiful College Chapel, as well as concerts, international tours, recordings and other performances. This year the choir will be launching their debut professional recording, on the Naxos label, and will be touring Germany during the Easter vacation.

The choir is directed by Graham Walker (ghw2@cam.ac.uk). More about St John's Voices may be found on their website.

Lady Margaret Players

The Lady Margaret Players are the St John's College theatrical society, funding and promoting the dramatic arts within College and beyond. We are all about low-commitment fun, open to anyone, regardless of experience or area, wishing to take part in the performing arts. We put on a variety of theatrical events throughout the year, including the annual pantomime, comedy scratch nights and freshers’ plays, and are open for funding applications year-round.

President: Joanna Burgess (jab323)

Junior Treasurer: Ryan Ward (rw708)

Senior Treasurer: Professor John Kerrigan

PhotoSoc

Are you interested in photography? Want to learn how to develop and print your own film? Then join the College Photography and Darkroom Society! Our committee is made up of passionate individuals who are dedicated to providing a space for photographers of all levels to come together and share their love of the art. We offer access to our College darkroom, a newly-revived specialized workspace used for developing photographic film. Don't miss this opportunity to learn new skills and meet fellow photography enthusiasts. Join us today!

Darkroom

The College darkroom has been developing Johnian memories for generations. We are excited to be reviving it and sharing film photography with a new generation. The darkroom is a specialized workspace used for developing photographic film. In the past, it was the only way to get a photograph from a film negative. To develop a film, it is typically loaded onto a reel and placed in a light-tight developing tank. Various chemicals are then poured into the tank to develop the film, and the process can take several minutes. Our facilities include all of the necessary materials to develop film from scratch and scan using a DSLR camera or enlarger.

MedSoc

St John’s College Medical Society (affectionately shortened to MedSoc) is the society to be a part of for the best academic, social and welfare support/ events. Representing all six years of medical and veterinary students, MedSoc not only supplements the comprehensive Cambridge course but extends this through our unique position in the college, university and wider medical field.

Our academic events range from smaller informal talks with Fellows and associated faculty, who themselves are often leading the forefront of medical science or clinical practice, to hearing from some the biggest and most influential names in Medicine in an intimate setting. Whether it be support with first year biochemistry to hearing about national response to COVID-19 from the CEO of NICE, you are sure to find an interest.

MedSoc is much more than an academic enrichment machine, however. Our social events help bring the medical and veterinary community close, from more frequent smaller-scale events, such as bowling, swaps and beyond, to more dressed-up dinners and garden parties.

Finally, we all need a break and MedSoc helps provide more informal welfare support through events, such as puppy therapy and cake baking.

If you have any question regarding MedSoc, feel free to contact Arnav (as3200) or Aimée (aes203).

St John's College Architecture Society - SJCAS

The aim of SJCAS is to promote architecture as an academic discipline within the college community, represent and promote the interests of architecture students towards the Tutors and the Governing Bodies of College, look after the Art Room (aka Architecture Hut) and the subject-relevant equipment stored there (and purchase additional pieces for the course should the need arise) as well as provide access to the Art Cupboard within that room for its members.

Additionally, it is a key function of SJCAS to organise speaker-events by inviting relevant professionals to host talks, open discussions and career sessions for the members of the society and other members of the college, should they be interested.

Parsons Society (Engineering)

The Parsons Society at St John's offers opportunities for St Johns' Engineers to socialise and further their understanding of the subject through organised events. The society currently has over 90 members. All Engineering undergraduates and graduates studying at St Johns are granted automatic membership. Highlights of the Parsons calendar include...

Parsons desserts

Early in the Michaelmas term a meal is organised to welcome new Engineering students to the College. This is a great opportunity for the Freshers to get to know students from other years within the college and share their experiences of the course and their time at Cambridge.

Parsons dinner

This provides an opportunity for all of the Undergraduates, Graduates and Fellows from St John’s to mix socially. At a previous dinner, a very popular presentation was made by Professor Ian Liddell, an alumni engineering student from the college and designer of the Millenium Dome.

End of year garden party

To celebrate the end of year, the Society holds a garden party in the Fellows Garden. This is a popular event with most Engineers from the College attending.

Everyone is very welcome to join our hive visits and get hands-on, with absolutely no experience or commitment required. Come along to don an invincible bee suit, delve into a hive of thousands of bees, and learn more about their fascinating behaviour.

Throughout the year, we run seasonal events, tastings and regular hive visits during the honey gathering season. We can also send interested beginners onto a regional beekeeping course to become the next generation of Johnian beekeepers.

Keep up to date with our bees on Facebook, via our mailing list, or get in touch with Queen Bee Maria (mlt39).
